The continuing tension between the Punjab police and the Central Reserve Police Force erupted when the CRPF personnel roughed up the Amritsar deputy commissioner and the senior superintendent of police after the bomb blast at a place of worship in which three persons were killed and scores of others injured. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi condemned communal and terrorist activities in Punjab and said negotiations were the only way to end a dispute. She agreed with an Opposition member that no issue should be settled on the streets. Several Lok Sabha Opposition members have been suggesting that Mrs Gandhi and Harchand Singh Longowal meet to find a solution to the Punjab tangle.

Strike In Bangladesh
Five people, including a seven-year-old boy, were killed when police and paramilitary forces fired on demonstrators during a violent half-day general strike in Dhaka called by political parties opposed to the 23-month-old military government of President General Hussain Muhammad Ershad. At least 500 people, many of them students, were injured as police fired tear gas shells on crowds at the Dhaka University campus.
Budget Concessions
The Union Finance Ministry has directed the administrative ministries to discuss with representatives of industries the benefits to consumers, from the excise duties concessions announced in the budget.
