The government may announce a judicial inquiry into the riots following Indira Gandhi’s assassination and also release some top Akali leaders, in a bid to avert the Akali threat to launch the next phase of their agitation on Baisakhi Day. The government might announce some further initiative which could provide the Akali leadership an opportunity to postpone their plan.

Reservation Unrest

Even as the Gujarat government took a tough stand, saying it would not review its reservation policy unless the anti-reservation agitation was withdrawn, two crude detonators exploded near the telephone exchange at Jesar in Bhavnagar district. No casualty or damage, however, was reported. Three students have been arrested. Rioters uprooted telephone poles and burnt furniture.

Pakistani Cabinet

The new Prime minister of Pakistan, Mohammed Khan Junejo, announced a 13-member civilian cabinet, retaining four ministers of the outgoing military regime. The new cabinet is a mixture of technical experts and politicians, with some having no previous government experience. The outgoing foreign minister, Sahabzada Yaqub Khan, retained his portfolio, along with the finance and planning minister, Mahbub ul-Haq.

Bus Tragedy

In one of the worst ever road accidents, 27 passengers were killed and 34 seriously injured when a tourist bus side-slipped and plummeted into the Chenab nallah near Ramban, on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. Reports reaching here said 23 persons died on the spot and four others succumbed to their injuries soon after reaching the Ramban hospital. According to a police spokesman, the authorities pressed into service Air Force helicopters to evacuate the seriously injured passengers of the ill-fated bus.
