Japan announced a Rs 160-crore credit (30 billion yen) to India to generate electricity from gas in Assam through turbine technology and agreed to set up a joint committee on science and technology to facilitate the transfer of the latest technology to India in the industrial field. These major decisions were taken at the wide-ranging talks the Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, had with his Japanese counterpart, Yasuhiro Nakasone.
Express Building case
The former works and housing minister, Sikander Bakht, strongly refuted the charge that he had shown undue favour to The Indian Express in the construction of theExpress Building in New Delhi. The charge was levelled against him by the Union Minister of State for Law, H R Bhardwaj, during a debate in Parliament.
Tohra to contest SGPC poll
Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra will be the Akali Dal nominee for the presidentship of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC). This was disclosed by the Akali Dal acting president and Punjab Chief Minister Surjit Singh Barnala. Barnala said other office-bearers for the SGPC executive would be announced at the time of the election.
NDFC in trouble
The severest ever strictures had recently been passed by a semi-judicial body against the working of the National Film Development Corporation, specially with regard to its policy and criteria for the import of foreign films for distribution through its network. “We are shocked to find,” concludes a judgment dated November 18 by the film certification appellate tribunal, “how public money is wasted by importing films which have no cultural or ethical values”.
