About 5 million central government employees will draw their salaries from October 1986 under the revised schedule announced by the Finance Minister. The ministry has laid down an interim timetable to ensure that the government decision on the recommended cut-off for the Central Pay Commission is implemented by the end of October. The commission report, presented to the government on June 30. while welcomed by a large section of the central staff, was assailed for what was termed injustice to certain jobs and scales. The Pay Commission received a large number of representations from employees’ organisations pointing out the problems they would face.
Talks on security belt bill
The Union Home Minister, Buta Singh, held consultations with the Gujarat Chief Minister, Amarsinh Choudhary, and the Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Jagmohan, over the proposed security-belt bill. He is expected to hold talks on the subject with the Chief Minister of Punjab, Surjit Singh Barnala, and the Rajasthan Chief Minister, Hari Dev Joshi.
