A day after the CPIM and the Congress started talks to reach an electoral understanding ahead of the Assembly polls, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday shot back saying the alliance is “unholy” and people will reject them.

Speaking on the sidelines of a foundation stone-laying event for improvement and beautification of a waterbody at Milan Sangha area in the outskirts of Agartala city, Chief Minister Manik Saha said his government has been doing pro-people work for the last five years and the erstwhile “Left Front government had left behind Rs 13,000-crore debt which the BJP-led dispensation reduced through effective management and planning”.

He took jibes at the Congress and the CPIM, saying: “CPIM tortured hundreds of Congress supporters in the past. Now, leaders of these parties are seen hugging each other. They have come together just for survival. This is an unholy alliance. People are well aware and give them a befitting reply in the coming elections.”

The CM also took potshots at the Congress over All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and Tripura in-charge Ajay Kumar’s visit to CPIM state headquarters on Friday to meet the communist party’s state chief Jitendra Chaudhury. “They have reached the party [CPIM] office… Why don’t they enroll themselves in the (communist) party? People should not be confused by these antics. Whoever wants the country to go forward, should support the BJP and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.

On allegations of violence, lack of development and shortage of jobs, the CM said the opposition leaders have “cataract” and should undergo surgery to see the development, prosperity and peace prevailing in the state under the BJP rule.

Former Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb also fired salvos at the Congress and the CPIM, saying the developments confirm BJP’s allegations that the two parties maintained clandestine links among themselves.

He also said CPIM is on its last journey and the BJP is not worried about its tying up with the Congress since “it would only ensure its departure”.
