Three persons were arrested Saturday from Sipahijala district for purportedly beating a woman and shaving her head off to ‘insult’ her after she failed to repay a community bank loan.

Ayesha Khatun (38) of Srimantapur village, 58 km away from Agartala, lodged a complaint with Sonamura police station on Friday evening. The police arrested three persons, including two men and a woman in connection with the case and forwarded them to a local court, seeking police custody today.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, Sonamura Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Souvik De said, “We have registered a FIR based on her complaint. According to her, she took a collective loan along with a few villagers from a bank. She failed to repay a part of the loan within the deadline due to financial constraints. Three villagers harassed her, beat her up on Friday and then partly shaved her head. She lodged her complaint in the evening and we have promptly arrested the accused persons.”

However, the official failed to give details of the quantum of loan taken by Ayesha and her peers from the bank.

Ayesha stays alone at her home in Srimantapur. Her son is away working at Chennai since few years.
