Former Tripura CM Manik Sarkar, Jitendra Chaudhury condole demise of Sitaram Yechury

CPI(M) politburo member and former Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar has said the demise of party stalwart Sitaram Yechury has created a vacuum in the secular and democratic political spectrum of the country.
The 72-year-old CPI(M) general secretary died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi on Thursday afternoon following severe lung infection.

“Yechury’s death is a severe blow to the Left and democratic movements in the country,” said Sarkar who served as the chief minister from 1998 to 2018.
Sarkar recalled that Yechury continued the important task of maintaining rapport with like-minded and secular political parties, “something which former party chief the late Harkishan Singh Surjeet had started”.
“Surjeet also inspired and guided Sitaram Yechury in this way. He (Yechury) efficiently did his work till he was physically active,” said Sarkar told reporters in Agartala.

He further stated that Yechury maintained positive and effective relations with all the non-Left secular and democratic parties.
Party state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said that Yechury had played a vital role in the Left democratic movement in Tripura over the past several decades.
“Yechury highlighted Tripura issues inside the Parliament, outside the Parliament and across the country. He had a vital role in the Left democratic movement in the state during every election and vital party events,” he said.
The CPI(M) would fly party flags at half-mast for the next seven days as a mark of paying respect to the veteran leader, the Opposition leader said.
Yechury had a vital role in forming INDIA bloc at the national level and also did series of campaigns for the last Assembly polls of Tripura, he added.
