As part of its initiative to expand the basket of daily necessities provided through the Public Distribution System (PDS), the Tripura Government will start supplying a host of spices to ration card holders from Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after a preparatory meeting on the move to distribute spices through PDS, Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said Chief Minister Manik Saha would officially inaugurate the spice distribution during an event at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan Tuesday. “Four spices, including chilli, cumin, coriander and turmeric powder, would be distributed through 2050 Fair Price Shops of the state,” Chowdhury said.

According to officials, the spices will be procured through a tender process from a local spice production entrepreneur.

In an effort to provide doorstep ration delivery, the Food and Civil Supplies Department is also considering inducting Ration Mitras, especially for the elderly and infirm who aren’t able to collect their ration themselves, the minister said.

On March 29 this year, the state government said it will introduce a corporation under the Food and Civil Supplies Department to diversify activities and boost items distributed through PDS and expand the basket of services catered by the government. The corporation will participate in the tender process, supply materials to other departments, and do business.

In future, the state government will also provide other necessary items, including edible oil, at subsidised rates. The department is also said to be working to formulate a way to distribute mustard oil at a subsidised rate along with rice, kerosene, sugar, salt etc.

As per the Food Department statistics, Tripura has 9.59 lakh ration card holders, including 1.88 lakh Antodaya beneficiaries, 4.92 lakh priority groups, 2882 Bru ration card holders, and 3.55 lakh APL card holders.
