Meghalaya Tuesday launched a 10-bed intensive care unit (ICU) project and tele ICU hub in Shillong in what is seen as a “monumental step” in developing the state’s healthcare infrastructure.

Speaking at the inaugural event, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said a host of ICUs are being launched at different locations of the state to provide quality healthcare services to even the most far-away regions.

“Our project aligns with the vision set five-and-a-half years ago, prioritising social sectors, with healthcare at the forefront,” the CM added that Meghalaya has seen a drastic reduction in maternal mortality rate (MMR), from more than 200 to 120.

“(It is) reflecting the transformative impact of technology on our healthcare sector. I envision a great future in showcasing how technology can revolutionise the country’s healthcare,” the chief minister said.

The healthcare augmentation project is expected to establish an interconnected network between the 10-bed ICU ward and the tele-ICU hub, enabling seamless communication and real-time data sharing for better treatment.

A statement from the state government said the ICU has integrated state-of-the-art medical facilities, advanced life support systems, and specialised equipment to provide comprehensive critical care services.

“The tele-ICU hub leverages technology to enable remote monitoring and consultation by intensivists and critical care specialists. This innovation ensures that even remote areas can access expert guidance in critical care management,” the statement said.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh urged nursing staff members and doctors to collaborate on this community-involved project and said while there might be apprehensions about artificial intelligence, technology strengthens communities, especially in the healthcare sector.

“This initiative reflects Meghalaya’s commitment to leveraging technology for the benefit of our citizens,” she said.

Principal Secretary for Health and Family Welfare Sampath Kumar said the government is leveraging technology to cross geographical barriers and realise the chief minister’s vision to elevate Manipur among the top ten states in the next five to ten years.
