The Manipur Police have recently seized 3.51 kg of heroin powder worth over Rs 30 crore in the international market and arrested a person in this connection. An accomplice of the accused, however, fled from the spot.
The arrest and seizure were made along National Highway-2 from Mantripukhri, Imphal East district Sunday afternoon.
The drugs were seized from a vehicle driven by one Md Samir, 23, son of Md Hefajuddin of Lilong Chaobok Mairenkhun, Thoubal district.
Ksh Shivakanta Singh, superintendent of police, Imphal East, said a team of the district police commando waylaid the vehicle after receiving a tip-off.
“During verification, Samir disclosed his identity and on further checking of the vehicle, 256 soap cases suspected to be containing heroin powder were found concealed… On weighing, the suspected heroin powder was found to be 3.51 kg approximately,” said the SP.
The accused reportedly disclosed that the contraband items belong to a drug dealer from Lilong. It has been learnt that Samir and one of his associates were transporting the drugs to Guwahati.
Samir further said he was to receive a sum of Rs 25,000 for transporting the consignment.
The vehicle used to ferry the seized drugs belongs to a person from West Bengal and the district police were investigating if the vehicle was stolen.
