The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) petitioned the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly Yumnam Khemchand on Thursday, seeking disqualification of two former party MLAs. Two separate petitions were filed by Senior Congress MLA K Ranjit Singh and Karong MLA D D Thaisii against Wangoi MLA Oinam Lukhoi Singh and Kakching MLA Y Surchandra. The Congress leaders, in their separate petitions, pointed out that Lukhoi and Surchandra won on Congress ticket and them joining the BJP afterwards is a clear sign that they have given up the membership of the Indian National
Altogether four MLAs from the Congress party had defected to the BJP in April 2017, including Kumbi MLA Sanasam Bira of Kumbi and Ngamthang Haokip of Saitu. The four MLAs were given a grand welcome along with the lone Trinamool Congress MLA, T Robindro Singh of Thanga constituency.
Ranjit Singh claimed that Oinam Lukhoi was rewarded for his defection by appointing him as vice-president of Manipur Infrastructure Development Agency (MIDA). Ranjit said that the support given by Lukhoi Singh to the BJP in strengthening the government violates defection laws under para 2 (1)(a) of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution.
In the last assembly election, the INC had won 28 seats and the BJP came second with 21 seats. However, the BJP formed the government with the support of four elected members from NPP, four from NPF, an INC MLA, and a lone LJP member. Congress MLA Thounaojam Shyamkumar also openly extended support to the BJP.
