Wednesday’s violence began when three houses in the Tronglaobi area of Bishnupur district were set on fire by miscreants. The incident triggered more violence, including arson and shooting incidents, in and around Tronglaobi area. One man was killed and two were injured in separate shooting incidents. Following this, the state cancelled curfew relaxation hours in four districts, including Imphal East, West and Bishnupur district.
Imphal city came to a standstill on Thursday owing to the imposition of total curfew. Only essential services were exempted from the purview of the curfew.
A large number of security forces were deployed in strategic areas of Imphal. Frisking and checking have been intensified, particularly at night time.
“Nobody wants to venture out given the prevailing situation. There are too many barricades and checkings. People go out only during emergencies,” said Th Christopher, a resident of Imphal East.

After Wednesday’s violence, the state requisitioned 20 companies of troops in addition to the more than 70 companies deployed across the state. “We have asked for 20 more companies of troops. Four companies have arrived on Thursday itself,” said Kuldiep Singh, security advisor to the Manipur government.
Singh said that security forces have been instructed to occupy vulnerable areas of Bishnupur district.
