CBI searches premises of Manipur ex-CM Ibobi Singh

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday conducted searches at the residence of senior Congress leader and former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh in connection with a case of alleged corruption it registered on Wednesday against him and three former chief secretaries of the state.

The case pertains to alleged misappropriation of state government funds worth Rs 332 crore in the Manipur Development Society (MDS). “It was alleged that the accused, while working as Chairman of MDS from June 30, 2009 to July 6, 2017, in conspiracy with others, misappropriated government funds to the tune of Rs 332 crore out of the total amount of Rs 518 crore which was entrusted to them for the purpose of executing development work,” the agency said. Ibobi Singh was CM of Manipur from 2002-2017. He was the Chairman of MDS between 2013 and 2014.

Other accused are retired IAS officers DS Poonia, P C Lawmuknga and O Nabakishore Singh, then project director Y Ningthem Singh, and the society’s administrative officer S Ranjit Singh.

The agency carried out searches in nine locations across Aizawl, Imphal and Gurugram and officials said they seized Rs 15.47 lakh in cash and demonetised currency with a face value of Rs 36.49 lakh.

The agency also claimed that during searches it recovered “documents related to various properties including plots, houses, flats, shops etc.; luxury cars; details of various bank accounts and other incriminating documents.”
