Even as the police were on the look-out for four of the 25 officers accused of having “bought” gazetted posts like the Assam Civil Service and Assam Police Service through the scam-tainted Assam Public Service Commission (APSC), Rajarshi Sen Deka, son of former minister Nilamoni Sen Deka surrendered in the Assam Police Special Branch on Monday, following which he too was taken into custody.
Rajarshi Sen Deka, who was posted as a Circle Officer at Musalpur in Baksa district after he was selected to the ACS in 2015 from the thousands of candidates who had taken the combined examinations in 2013, had remained untraced for exactly a week after the police had launched a crack-down against 25 such officers on November 7. His father Nilamoni Sen Deka was a powerful minister in the erstwhile Congress government headed by Tarun Gogoi till April 2016.
Deka, who was produced before a court later in the day, was sent to 14 days’ police custody. With the arrest of Deka, the number of officers arrested on charges of having bought their posts by allegedly paying bribes to top APSC members including its then chairman Rakesh Kumar Paul, has risen to 22. Those arrested also includes a neice of senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha member Rajen Gohain, who is currently minister of state for railways in the Modi government.
