Twenty-eight persons including ten policemen were injured in a clash between BJP and CPM workers on Thursday at Belonia of Tripura’s south district, 90 Km from here.
Speaking to indianexpress.com, Assistant Inspector General Smriti Ranjan Das said ten policemen and 18 others were injured in the clash as the cops tried to bring the situation under control by resorting to lathicharge and firing tear gas shells.
The clashes began after senior CPM leader and South Tripura zilla parishad chief Himangshu Roy’s vehicle was attacked with stones.
“Nearly a hundred miscreants started pelting stones at the vehicle of South Tripura Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Himangshu Roy. He was given police protection and policemen trying to protect him were also attacked. We used mild lathi charge and tear gas shells to bring the situation under control”, an official from the police headquarters said.

Roy was on his way to meet District Magistrate Debapriya Bardhan to complain about the recent attacks against his family. Roy had previously claimed that he was being pressured to resign from his post along with other elected members of CPM.
CPM Belonia sub-divisional secretary Tapas Dutta alleged that the assault was carried out by “BJP backed hooligans”. He condemned the incident and sought immediate action against all involved with the incident.
A statement from CPM’s state headquarters said that Roy’s residence at Barpathari in South Tripura also came under attack on Tuesday. Such attacks are attempts to silence the voice of opposition through murderous assault, CPI (M) state office secretary Haripada Das said.
A suo motu case was registered by the police in connection with the clashes. The ruling BJP and opposition CPM supporters approached Belonia police station to register counter FIRs on the incident. However, no case has been filed at the time of writing.
A few policemen sustained minor injuries and were discharged after primary treatment. However, three persons were referred to Gomati District Hospital at Tepania in critical condition this evening. The trio sustained head injuries.
BJP spokesperson Ashok Sinha said he was not aware of the incident. “As of now, I do not know what happened there. I am trying to find out the details. We shall let you know after the concrete details come in hand,” he said.
