Sanctuary status for Assam’s rainforest

UPPER Assam’s Joydehing rainforest will soon get a wildlife sanctuary status. Joydehing, covering about 500 sq kms in the twin districts of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh, is home to India’s only ape—the hollock gibbon. It’s also the habitat of other endangered species such as the slow loris, capped langur, pig-tailed and stump-tailed macaque.

THE Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh IFCSAP has complained that the Christian missionaries were carrying out mass conversion of the tribal population in the frontier state bordering China posing a ‘‘severe threat’’ to the life and culture of the indigenous ethnic groups.

Egg on Meghalaya’s face

MEGHALAYA imports about 350 lakh eggs every year to meet its growing demand. Local poultry production which is supposed to have started on a massive scale ten years ago, has however remained stagnant. Meghalaya spends roughly Rs 480 lakh annually on egg import and another Rs 1 crore on importing one-day old broiler chicks.
