Lt Gen (Retd) Zameeruddin Shah is set to be appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU),it is learnt.
Sources said President Pratibha Patil,Visitor of the University, was expected to put her seal of approval on Shahs appointment after her return from abroad. The AMU Court, the highest governing body of the university, had shortlisted a panel of three names for the post and forwarded it to the President.
It comprised Shah, former IAS officer Noor Mohammad and former IPS officer Khalid Rizvi.
The University has been without a Vice-Chancellor for a month now,and eminent Muslims are lobbying for an expeditious appointment. Former Rajya Sabha member Wasim Ahmad, who met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday, said the latter assured him that there would be no further delay in making the appointment and a decision to this effect would follow shortly.
The AMU Court had drawn the panel through voting at a special meeting last month. While Shah had secured 97 votes,Noor Mohammad polled 85 and Rizvi got 83 votes.
