The CBI on Friday claimed that interior designer Zahida Parvez hired killers to eliminate Shehla Masood because she was unable to come to terms with the activist’s proximity to a BJP MLA.

The agency described Shehla’s murder as a crime of passion, reaching its conclusion from entries in a personal diary kept by Zahida,a 36-year-old mother of two daughters.

“Ya to main suicide karungi ya use raaste se hataaungi,” Zahida allegedly wrote in the diary recovered from Design Era,her office in Bhopal’s commercial M P Nagar locality. Zahida, said CBI officers, did not write regularly or extensively, but appeared to have been depressed in the last few months. Her state of mind seemed to have been reflected on her Facebook page, full of sentimental, sad prose.

CBI officers said Shakib Ali alias Danger had sent an SMS to Zahida immediately after Shehla murder on August 16,2011,saying “Mubarak ho kaam ho gaya.”

A CBI spokesperson in Delhi said BJP MLA Dhruv Narayan Singh, who was close to both Shehla and Zahida, continues to be a suspect in the case. The 53-year-old legislator from Bhopal, whose father Govind Narayan Singh was chief minister of Madhya Pradesh in the sixties, has been questioned by the CBI.

Singh was chairman of Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation when the rivalry between Shehla and Zahida is believed to have started. Shehla’s father Sultan Masood said Singh used to be a regular visitor to their Koh-e-Fiza home, and was the first person he spoke to after his daughter’s murder.

“He was silent and did not react. He then disconnected the phone. After some time,a man identifying himself as Gupta called back from the same number to say that Singh was busy in prayer, and would call later,” Masood told The Indian Express.

The CBI today arrested Saba Farooqui,a friend and employee of Zahida’s,saying she assisted in the conspiracy. Saba had appeared before reporters after Zahida’s arrest on February 28,and insisted that her friend was innocent. A bike allegedly used by Shehla’s killers to escape after the shooting was recovered from near Zahida’s home today.
