A two-decade-old popular Malayalam film song sung in an unplastered house holding her son on her hip has changed the life of a Kerala housewife.
P Chandralekha (33) of Vadasseri-kkara in Pathanamthitta district in Kerala has become a celebrity after the song recorded on a mobile phone was uploaded on YouTube. The four-minute video has gone viral, with 2 lakh people viewing it so far.
Chandralekha, who has never sung in public, has been flooded with calls for the past week after her mobile number was added to the clip. Even neighbours have not heard the economics graduate sing but popular music directors have promised her a chance, with a banner already offering a devotional album.
She said her rendition was recorded by a relative,Darshan,on his mobile phone a year ago. My family knew I sing well. Darshan wanted to record my singing.
Chandralekha said Darshan had told her he uploaded the video on YouTube but she could not watch it without a computer or internet at home. Recently,a woman from my native place who works abroad alerted me about the video. Subsequently,Darshan added my mobile number to the clip, triggering an avalanche of phone calls. Many wanted to hear my voice again, she said. Chandralekha said she became popular in a week. I know nothing about music, not even the basics. But I have sung in school-level competitions, said Chandralekha, whose husband Raghunathan is a part-time LIC employee.
Noted Malayalam music director Mohan Sithara said she could be groomed into a professional singer. She is talented and her singing has a good feel. But she needs training, he said.
