Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal is believed to have told the National Investigation Agency that his fellow operatives involved in the July 13,2011,Mumbai triple blasts continued to stay in the city after the attack and one of them was even admitted at J J Hospital for treatment of jaundice.
Yasin has claimed that Waqas Ahmed Shaikh, who investigators suspect is a Pakistani national, had complained of a fever and his liver was found to be enlarged. He was under treatment at the government hospital for nine days,Yasin is said to have claimed.
Waqas allegedly gave a false identity and fake Mumbai address to the hospital during admission. Yasin is believed to have told interrogators that Waqas also underwent a laser surgery in October 2011 to disguise his look.
Waqas apparently used spectacles with thick lenses and decided to undergo surgery at a private clinic to get rid of the glasses.
There has been some confusion among intelligence and security agencies about the identity of Waqas, with some suspecting him to be Azamgarh resident Ariz Khan alias Junaid, alleged to be involved in the 2008 Delhi serial blasts.
However,Yasins inputs indicate that he is a Pakistani national and a technician with knowledge of circuits and explosives. Besides Waqas,Yasin is also believed to have named Mohammad Tahseen Akhtar alias Monu as another IM operative involved in the 2011 Mumbai blasts. Tahseen is also suspected to be involved in the 2013 Hyderabad bombings.
