A woman was arrested on charges of cheating more than 20 people in the past few years to the tune of Rs 3.27 crore on the promise of doubling of money and getting loans from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund,a top police official said.
City Police Commissioner C Sylendra Babu said Gayathri,a middle-aged woman,had confessed after her arrest yesterday that she had collected about Rs 3.19 crore from 24 persons on the promise of doubling money. She had also collected Rs one lakh from five persons on the promise of getting loan from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and also Rs five lakh from five persons for getting loans under the Self Help Group scheme,he said.
Police have seized one car,15 sovereign of gold ornaments and two cell phones from Gayatri,he added.
Babu said the accused was arrested following a complaint from Nagaraj,a realtor. She had cheated Nagaraj of Rs 12 lakh after telling him that in order to encash a cheque for Rs 50 crore from abroad that was in her possession,Rs 50 lakh had to be deposited in a bank as initial payment,the Commissioner said.
Her accomplice in the crime,which took place about 18 months ago,was absconding,police said.
The accused was produced in a local court today and was remanded to custody,Babu said.
