Curfew continued in South Kashmir’s Shopian for the tenth day as the inquiry officer started recording statements of locals who reportedly witnessed the killing of five youth on September 7.

On Wednesday,CRPF killed another youth leading to fresh protests. Soon after the killings, the state announced a magisterial probe and appointed Deputy Commissioner Shopian as an inquiry officer to ascertain how the five were killed outside the CRPF camp.

Deputy Commissioner Shopian,Bashir Ahmad Bhat, told The Indian Express that he has started recording statements. “To determine facts,we will record statements of locals especially those who witnessed the killings on September 7 and 11.”

On Sunday,Director General of Police Ashok Prasad visited Shopian and reviewed the situation there. Last week, the cabinet directed the police chief to replace the Gagreen CRPF camp with a contingent of J&K Police.

The government has directed police authorities to determine facts of the case, including identity of the unidentified deceased within 48 hours. The CRPF maintains all the four killed on Saturday were militants, while police said three were civilians; the fourth was Pakistani militant Abdullah Haroon. The officials also said in case facts are not established on time,a judicial inquiry might be set up.
