Taking note of the report on the housing plight of aborigine Mankidia and Hill Khadia tribes that appeared in The Indian Express on July 17,the National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the Orissa government, asking it to submit a report on the issue in four weeks.
The Indian Express had reported about the lack of windows in most of the houses built for the inhabitants of Hill Khadia and Mankidia colony in Kendumundi village of Mayurbhanj district. With little space for ventilation, they prefer to live in huts built just outside the concrete houses built by the government.
Taking suo motu cognizance of the report, the NHRC observed that the contents of the press report,if true, raise a serious issue of violation of right to live with dignity. The colony was an effort to get the Mankidias, who moved around in forests, settle in one place and benefit from development.
