Asif Ali Zardari,Pakistan President

Pakistan has always held its relations with the US in “high esteem” and Obama’s announcements on the new American strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan will further cement the ties between the two countries. The creation of Reconstruction Opportunity Zones in Pakistan’s tribal areas with help from the US will create an enabling environment for the people there, who have been distressed by terrorism and extremism for a long time

Shah Mehmood Qureshi,Pakistan Foreign Minister

“I think the new Obama administration’s approach is a very positive approach. They are looking toward a regional approach to the situation…. The elections… will certainly help improve the security situation in Afghanistan. We need a stable, peaceful environment in Afghanistan to have a meaningful election so it (the new U.S. strategy) will certainly help.”

Humayun Hamidzada,Spokesperson for hamid karzai

“We welcome the announcement made by President Obama, agree with all major conclusions and the main outline of the strategic review… We particularly welcome the recognition of the regional aspect of the problem in Afghanistan and specifically recognition that the al-Qaeda threat is mainly emanating from Pakistan.”

James Appathurai,NATO Spokesperson

“The announcement of substantial new resources for this international effort is very welcome. This will be an important contribution to the discussion at the NATO summit on NATO’s overall approach to helping build security in Afghanistan.”
