What Are You Watching?

Clearly, entertainment is the buzz word for the festive weekend. While the Vipul Shah- directed Action Replayy is a high-concept romcom about time travel,Golmaal 3 carries forward the Rohit Shetty brand of fun unlimited cinema.

It’s Akshay Kumar vs. Ajay Devgn at the box-office this Friday. It’s a contest between Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor on the Diwali weekend when Action Replayy and Golmaal 3 clash for box-office supremacy

Clearly, entertainment is the buzz word for the festive weekend. While the Vipul Shah- directed Action Replayy is a high-concept romcom about time travel on the lines of Back To The Future,Golmaal 3 carries forward the Rohit Shetty brand of fun unlimited cinema. Both Ajay and Akshay are back with directors who have crafted blockbuster successes with them in the past.

The high-point of Action Replayy is the Akshay-Ash jodi, cast after Rajkumar Santoshi’s Khakee. The retro look of the 70’s is well publicised and the song Zor ka jhatka has this uncanny quality to just stick in mind. Golmaal 3 has the colours, the one-liners,the cars and also Mithun Chakraborty. Kareena’s character, that of a chavani-chaap tomboy called Daboo (as homage to her father,Randhir Kapoor) is touted as the film’s calling-card. Incidentally,Randhir Kapoor plays a pivotal role in Action Replayy also. The father and daughter collision at the box-office is one for film geeks to record.

With the year nearing its expiry date,it’s an interesting line-up at the marquee. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish comes out on November 19. The combined star-power of Hrithik,Ash and Sanjay Leela Bhansali make this a most-awaited film. Hrithik plays a wheelchair-bound magician in the film while Ash plays his nurse in the romantic drama. The duo sizzled in Dhoom:2 and Jodhaa Akbar, and it’ll be a challenge for Sanjay to take his actors’ crackling quotient forward.

There’s a new pair in town with Deepika Padukone and Imran Khan playing out the break-up dance in Kunal Kohli’s production,Break Ke Baad. After Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na and I Hate Luv Storys, the mandate for Imran is clear: his audience wants to see him in the romcom space. Deepika is slowly coming into her own. Her cinema choices reflect her keenness to experiment. All her releases this year have been diverse: Karthik Calling Karthik,Housefull,Lafangey Parindey and Break Ke Baad, which will be followed by Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey,which pairs her with Abhishek Bachchan. In the Ashutosh Gowariker film,Deepika plays a freedom fighter. The girl is trying hard and needs to be commended for her effort.

The year’s biggest party is of course being hosted by Farah Khan. She is back in the director’s chair with the keenly-awaited Tees Maar Khan. The Akshay Kumar- Katrina Kaif comic action flick promises to have all the ingredients of the Great Farah Khan Entertainers like Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om. Katrina’s hot “item” song Sheila ki jawani and the qawaali featuring Salman and Akshay are already industry talking- points. The year should end on a high note if the pre-release buzz of the film is to be believed.

Not to be left behind, the country’s premiere production house,Yash Raj Films, get ready to launch a new director and a new actor in Band Baaja Baraat. Directed by Maneesh Sharma, the film co-stars Anushka Sharma with newbie Ranvir Singh, who play Delhi based wedding planners in the romcom. That’s a lot of choice on offer. So the question is,what are you watching?
