Wedding gift for Chelsea from Hanoi

Chelsea Clinton’s big day may be half a world away, but that hasn’t tempered enthusiasm in Vietnam for her upcoming nuptials.

Chelsea Clinton’s big day may be half a world away, but that hasn’t tempered enthusiasm in Vietnam for her upcoming nuptials. In Hanoi on Thursday for diplomatic meetings a little over a week before the July 31 wedding,mother-of-the-bride and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was given a wedding present — a white tablecloth — for her daughter by the Vietnamese government along with gemstone mosaic portrait of her and Chelsea during their 2000 visit to the country.

“Very nice,” Hillary said when Vietnam’s Foreign Minister and deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem gave her the tablecloth and congratulated her on the marriage of her only child. “I’m very honoured. I will be very pleased to give it to her.”

At a luncheon hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce,Hillary was greeted by a group of women holding a sign reading,“Mazel Tov Chelsea”.

Hillary laughed and said that travelling while “trying to help organise my daughter’s wedding is proof… that I may be lacking in common sense.” She said she was ready to “return home and enjoy a most wonderful event”.

Hillary, who is in Vietnam to mark 15 years of normalised relations between the countries, expressed concern on Thursday about the Vietnamese government’s intolerance of dissent.

Noting Vietnam’s recent jailing of democracy activists, attacks on religious groups, and curbing of Internet sites,Hillary said she had discussed human rights in a meeting with Pham Gia Khiem.
