Vidarbha state not viable: CM

Kelkar Committee report on regional imbalance is being discussed.

CM Prithviraj Chavan Thursday suggested that separate Vidarbha state wont be viable. Of the Rs 65,000 crore VAT collection in the state,Amravati division collects Rs 500 crore and Nagpur division Rs 3,000 crore. So,I think while peoples sentiments must be respected,we must take a very hard look at whether a separate Vidarbha state will be viable, Chavan said at a Meet the Press event organised by Nagpur Union of Working Journalists. Chavan was replying to a query regarding the recent referendum pitching heavily in favour of statehood.

When emotional fervour gets created and sub-national sentiments come up,then people do get excited, he said about the support to referendum. The Kelkar Committee report on regional imbalance is being discussed. We will be able to better assess the situation as to what is better for people of Vidarbha once it is analysed, the CM said.
