The 84-Kosi Parikrama of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has proved a damp squib with the padyatra having not been held at any place over the last three days. Public meetings and discourses, planned on the yatra route to create public opinion in favour of the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, have not taken place either.
The yatra was scheduled to start August 25 and end September 13. But the arrest of senior VHP leaders on the day of the launch, however, threw a spannner in the works. While the VHP said the yatra had kicked off from Saryu Ghat in Ayodhya as scheduled and that sants from various parts of the country will take part in the yatra every day,no sant from any state has taken part so far.
Sants from Jaipur had to start the yatra on Sunday, sants from Bhopal and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh had to join it Monday, and seers of Kashi (Varanasi) region were to lead the yatra Tuesday.
VHP spokesperson in Faizabad Sharad Sharma confirmed that no sant from these cities have taken part in the yatra so far. Only local sants and VHP workers of Faizabad and Basti have participated, Sharma said. VHP patron Ashok Singhal is in New Delhi after he was released by the Lucknow police Monday evening.
