UP Lokayukta N K Mehrotra Monday recommended action against officials of Panchayati Raj Department for misappropriation of about Rs 40 lakh in construction of toilets in Rae Bareli and Amethi districts during the BSP regime under the Centre’s sanitation scheme.

He,however, exonerated former Panchayati Raj Minister Swami Prasad Maurya, against whom the complaint had been filed, saying nothing indicated his involvement. The complaint had alleged that Maurya had siphoned off large sums of money meant for construction of toilets in connivance his officials. Maurya is now Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.

Mehrotra said he asked the district development officers of Rae Bareli and Amethi to verify all toilets built under the scheme. He said his inquiry revealed that 1.9 lakh toilets were to be constructed in that period, but only 18,031 were found to have been built.
