The state government Saturday announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to 1,800 Muslim families,who were displaced after riots in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts and are not willing to return to their homes from the relief camps despite efforts by the district administration.
The state has released Rs 90 crore to be distributed among 1,800 families belonging to nine villages of two districts to enable them to rehabilitate at any place of their choice. The beneficiaries of the financial help will be free to use the amount either to repair their houses or to construct new ones at any place.
The government has taken the decision on the basis of reports received from the administration of Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts. In their reports,district administration officials have reportedly informed that these families were not willing to return to their homes and they could be rehabilitated by providing financial help.
The families do not want to go back to their villages as they fear threats from villagers against whom they registered FIRs, an official said.
The official said that families in relief camps were asking the government to provide free houses or land to rehabilitate them. But construction of houses for such a large number of families can take at least six months, he added.
