‘Unsatisfactory bacteria level in some station water samples’

On steps taken to improve water quality,he said,“When any sample is found unsatisfactory,appropriate action like additional chlorination and rectification or treatment of source of contamination are taken.”

Out of the over nine lakh water samples tested by the Indian Railways at its stations last year,over one lakh had “unsatisfactory” levels of bacteria and chlorine,the government told the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

In a written reply to the House,Railway Minister Mukul Roy said,“In over 8,241 railway stations,64,172 and 9,20,670 water samples were tested for bacteriological and residual chlorine tests respectively during the year 2011.” Of this,6,322 samples of bacteriological test and 1,00,025 samples of residual chlorine test were found unsatisfactory,he said.
