The Mumbai Police Crime Branch has set up what it claims is “foolproof” security for alleged Lashkar-e-Toiba operative Zabiuddin Ansari, currently lodged in a lock-up at the Crime Branch headquarters located in the police commissioner’s office compound at Crawford Market in south Mumbai.

The alleged handler of the 26/11 attackers is being moved every few hours from one high-security location to another — both within the compound and outside — to prevent any attempt on his life,Crime Branch officers said. CCTV cameras are continuously recording images of his location, and the footage is being monitored round the clock, they said.

“The security detail for him includes commandos of the Quick Response Team of the Mumbai Police and other officers. He is being moved around to ensure that plans to attack him,if any,are foiled,” said an officer.

The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that only six Crime Branch officers have access to the structure or cell where Ansari is being held. “The six officers include the investigating officer of the case and five others assisting him. No one else has access to the structure. These officers must surrender their weapons before being allowed to enter his cell,” said the officer.

An officer of the rank of assistant commissioner of police is in charge of security arrangements. “An ACP has been given the task of ensuring that security for Ansari remains at the optimum level. He is in solitary confinement, and all other cells on that floor have been emptied,” said an officer.

Ansari has been observing roza for the month of Ramzan, and is supplied food for sehri and iftaar. “The food is being brought from a trusted place. But it goes through various checks before it is served to him,” said the officer.
