Under fire,Karat clears air on Pranab

It is necessary to utilise the conflicts and fissures within the ruling alliance. Abstention at this juncture will not help in this regard,” he said.

Justifying the CPM Politburo’s decision to support UPA’s presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee — a move which has angered a section of the party — general secretary Prakash Karat on Monday said the party’s stated line of fighting the Congress and the BJP “should not be equated” as “maintaining equi-distance” from “both on all matters”.

In an article that will appear in the forthcoming issue of party mouthpiece People’s Democracy,Karat has written that “the political line of fighting the Congress and the BJP should not be equated as maintaining equi-distance from both on all matters.”

He said on the question of President,“since the key issue is that the constitutional head of state should be firmly secular and not in any way open to BJP influence,CPM’s thrust will be against a BJP-sponsored candidate.

He also made it clear that the party factored in the “deepening rift” within the UPA triggered by the stand taken by the Trinamool Congress while deciding to back Mukherjee and not abstain from voting. “…It is necessary to utilise the conflicts and fissures within the ruling alliance. Abstention at this juncture will not help in this regard,” he said.
