More than three weeks after the state government got the post of chairman in Uttarakhand Seeds and Tarai Development Corporation included in the list of those exempted from the “office of profit” bracket,Agriculture Minister Harak Singh Rawat resigned from the post of chairman,USTDC,on Thursday.

Earlier, the BJP had launched a campaign against Rawat for occupying two offices of profit, including the Cabinet berth. On his part,Rawat had defended himself by saying that in his capacity as Agriculture Minister he could hold the post of chairman,USTDC. The state government finally kept the post out of the ambit of office of profit through an ordinance which Governor Dr Aziz Qureshi approved recently.

A PIL was filed recently in the high court challenging continuation of Rawat as a minister and chairman of USTDC simultaneously.

Sources said the government was finding it difficult to defend his case in the court.

Addressing the media,Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said that the government has appointed Forest and Rural Development Commissioner B P Pandey as the new chairman of USTDC. Bahuguna said Rawat resigned because as a minister,he already had a lot of work.
