Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan Sunday said the state government will appoint noted criminal lawyer Ujjwal Nikam as prosecution counsel in the case of gangrape of a photojournalist in Mumbai on Thursday. He said the case will be heard in a fast-track court.
All the five suspects in the case have been arrested. The last one was arrested from Delhi. To expedite delivery of justice to the victim,the case will be heard in the fast-track court. The government will appoint the best lawyer available to prosecute the arrested suspects. I am going to request well known criminal lawyer Ujjwal Nikam to take up the case as prosecution counsel. I am sure that he will accept the case and make sure that the perpetrators of the heinous crime get severest punishment, Chavan told reporters in Pune.
Chavan said he had met the family including the mother of the victim two days ago and the government will extend all the support needed by the victim and the family.
Nikam was prosecution lawyer in several high profile cases including those of 26/11 attacker Abu Ajmal Kasab; the killings of Dalits in Khairlanji; the infamous Kothewadi gangrape case; and the 1993 bomb blasts case.
