Two top IAS officers held in Bengal for scam

The CID of West Bengal Police arrested two senior IAS officers,one of them retired,for their alleged involvement in a Rs 328-crore scam

The CID of West Bengal Police on Wednesday arrested two senior IAS officers,one of them retired,for their alleged involvement in a Rs 328-crore scam related to supply of iron ore to China. The scam took place in 2004-05 when a consignment returned by China due to poor quality was illegally sold off.

The two officers are R M Jameer (1977 batch),who has already retired,and Debaditya Chakraborty (1976 batch),who was due to retire in September 2013. After he had been charged with involvement in the scam,Chakraborty,the then secretary,Department of Higher Education,was put on compulsory waiting (for posting) in August 2006. The status had since not changed.

Chakraborty and Jameer were managing directors of the West Bengal Essential Commodities Supplies Corporation,which supplied iron ore to China through private firms Bharat Minmet Corporation and Seacoast Shipping Pvt Ltd. The case was handed over to CID in June 2011.
