An explosion at Cholavandan railway station near Madurai left two persons dead on the spot and injured eight others on Tuesday. Station master Arumugam was also seriously injured in the blast,suspected to have been caused by crackers being illegally transported ahead of Diwali.
Sources said the explosion happened few minutes past six in the evening,when a passenger train from Mayiladuthurai arrived at the Cholavandan station. As per initial reports,it is suspected that bags full of crackers brought by local traders could have caused the explosion. According to sources,Paramasivam,a local trader,had brought the crackers to Cholavandan on Tuesday. On reaching the station,he asked Ramar,a local man,to help him unload the sacks. However,the crackers exploded killing both and injuring several passengers,including at least two children. Station master has been admitted to the General Hospital in Madurai.
