Two Assam Rifles personnel hurt in blast in Imphal

Two personnel of the Assam Rifles were injured in a low-intensity blast in Keishampat area

Two personnel of the Assam Rifles were injured in a low-intensity blast in Keishampat area here on Wednesday.

The explosion, which took place at 8:40 am,was triggered by a remote-control device and an IED was strapped to a two-wheeler in front of Keishampat community hall on one of Imphal’s busiest roads. The blast took place barely a kilometre away from Raj Bhavan — the area patrolled by the Assam Rifles and soldiers gather at the community hall from time to time.

The injured were taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.

No underground group in the state has so far claimed responsibility for the blast.

On Monday,a youth was killed in an IED blast supposedly carried out by rebels at Nongpok Keithelmanbi village in Thoubal district. Over the past week, the Manipur police have been recovering grenades and small arms like Chinese pistols from different areas of the valley.

The police suspect that the recent spurt of violence has to do with the upcoming gram panchayat polls. However, the site of Wednesday’s explosion does not fall under the municipality area.
