TV ratings: TRAI for larger sample of homes
TRAI said homes required for computation shall be randomly sampled from the total.
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has recommended TV ratings from a larger sample of homes and increasing their numbers every year.
A minimum panel size of 20,000 should be implemented within 6 months of guidelines coming into force. Thereafter, panel size shall be increased by 10,000 annually until it reaches 50,000. The panel of homes will be representative of all television households, TRAI said in its recommendations on measuring TV viewership preference submitted to the Iamp;B ministry earlier this week.
TRAI said homes required for computation shall be randomly sampled from the total. It suggested 25 per cent of homes be rotated every year. It recommended secrecy be maintained on which households are in the panel .
Currently,TV viewership is commercially measured only by TAM. The subject of TV ratings has been contentious as broadcasters have often questioned the accuracy of data generated.
Cross-holdings between rating agencies and users may result in biased ratings and open up the possibility of distortion in the system. In the consultation paper,it was proposed that there be no cross-holdings between rating agencies and broadcasters, advertisers, media agencies and advertising agencies and cross-holding was defined as having substantial equity of 10 or more, TRAI said.
