The national working committee of the Trinamool Congress Saturday suspended Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh for anti-party activities. Two other MPs,Tapas Paul and Satabdi Roy,were spared after they wrote to the party leadership and apologised, promising they would not do or say anything that could damage the party in the future,TMC general secretary Partha Chatterjee said.

The three MPs recently shared the stage with TMC MP Somen Mitra and his wife and TMC MLA Sikha. Speaking against the party, the leaders said that “inner democracy” in the TMC has eroded lately.

Ghosh also questioned the party leadership’s decision to give approval to land acquisition for an airport city in Durgapur and compared it to the Singur land acquisition controversy of 2008.

On Saturday,Ghosh said he never received the show-cause notice that the party claimed was issued to him prior to his suspension. “So I did not get a chance to defend my case. I would talk to Partha Chatterjee regarding this. Mamata Banerjee continues to be my leader,” he said.

Party spokesperson Mukul Roy,meanwhile, said,“Ghosh has indulged in gross indiscipline and no one is above the party’s constitution.”

When contacted,Somen Mitra, who is known to be a ‘rebel’ within the party, said,“I do not believe in announcements by the Trinamool Congress because disciplinary actions were announced against my wife as well. But she, too, never got the show-cause letter, neither did she get any official communication from the party. We keep hearing that arrangements have been made for her to sit separately in the Assembly, that she no longer belongs to the TMC. But interestingly, she keeps getting letters from the party chief whip asking her to this and do that. How can that happen? Either she is not in the party or she is.”
