I rate Swarg as my most favourite film. Swarg did well. Though a serious film, people even today talk about it as it struck a chord. I was working with Rajesh Khanna for the first time. I shared a good rapport with him. He never threw tantrums on the sets. For Swarg,I made him wear a wig – he was reluctant but I insisted. He said,Tu bada zid karta hai. Govinda was outstanding too. I still remember his lines from the film.
Shola Aur Shabnam
Shola Aur Shabnam is my best film,a turning-point in my career. Since my earlier movies hadnt done too well,I was still struggling as a director. With this,my struggle ended and success story started. But it was quite an ordeal to make the film. Its tough to handle so many people when you have not yet made your mark as a filmmaker. You get pushed around easily but I fought back. And Im glad that Shola Aur Shabnam did very well. Govinda helped me a lot and stood by me. He encouraged me to do the film.

I tasted real success in 1993 with Aankhen. It was a blockbuster in the true sense of the term. Producer Pehlaj Nihalani also put in a lot of effort for this film. Govinda too was instrumental in making it a huge success. He took it to a different level. Kader bhai(Khan) was outstanding in his double role. People also loved the monkey and Bappi Lahiris music was superb. The song Lal dupatte wali is still a rage.
Bol Radha Bol
This was another of my good films. It was the first time that I worked with Rishi Kapoor, who is a fabulous actor. Juhi Chawla was outstanding. The music too was a hit with Tu tu tara. This was also my first film where the hero had a double-role,and Rishi played the negative role very well. Unfortunately the film did not open well. I think the title was misleading, but after the weekend,it went on to become a silver jubilee hit. I had great support from producer Nitin Manmohan.
Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan
Bade Miyan… was a runaway hit when it released during Diwali. For 40 weeks, there was no break in its opening collection; 100 percent collection tha. Amitabh Bachchan was doing a film after a very long time and I was working with him for the first time so I was in awe of him. He is a directors delight as was Madhuri Dixit.
Judwaa was my first film with Salman Khan and till date he has done maximum moviesnine with me. Most of them fared well at the box office. Initially, handling him was not easy. He is very naughty and gives the impression that he is not serious, but once he is in front of the camera,he is simply brilliant. I think Judwaa was one of his most entertaining films.
Deewana Mastana was an outstanding film. But it took me a long time to make it as it was difficult to handle the two big heroes,Govinda and Anil Kapoor. Both of them had some issues. I had worked in Andaz with Anil and later went on to do five films with him. However,as actors, both he and Govinda were superb. I rate Anil very high in this movie. Govinda was tailor-made for the role. I made Deewana Mastana for Manmohan Desai,my guru. He had signed me to direct a film but he died. Then I made Deewana Mastana for his banner as my tribute for him. Laxmikant-Pyarelals songs were very good. Along with the guys,Juhi too was excellent. Johny Lever was hilarious.
Biwi No 1
This film released in 99 when the World Cup was going on in full josh. Yet it opened with a bang and was the biggest hit of that year. This was another film that I enjoyed making. I had worked with Karisma Kapoor in Haseena Maan Jayegi,Raja Babu and other films. But Biwi No 1was a different ball-game. Anil and Salman were very good. The script worked big-time. Sushmita Sen became a star after this film and won all the awards that year.
Mujhse Shaadi Karogi
I think Akshay Kumar was outstanding in this film. He was the perfect fit to play the second lead. It was my first film with Priyanka Chopra and it propelled her to stardom. She is very focussed, sincere and extremely easy to work with. The film had two top heroes,Salman and Akshay. Amrish Puri was simply superb. It was one of his last films. Even the music of the film was brilliant. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi was composers Sajid- Wajids first step towards success.
Govinda was practically in his pre-retirement stage as he had taken up politics. But nothing was working in his favour. One day he called and said,David,I want to get back to work. I was happy to hear from him. There was a long gap since he had quit so he said that he was ready to do anything. I told him,You will do only what you deserve. You are a hero. And for me you will always be a hero. That same day I met Sohail Khan. I had just done Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya with him and was supposed to make another film for his banner. So I suggested a film with Salman and Govinda. I asked Govinda to meet me at a 5-star coffee shop. I went with Sohail. I told Govinda,Chal yeh film karte hain. After that he started getting films. And Salman and he shared a great chemistry in the film.
