The Rajasthan Government on Monday told the Supreme Court that it had suspended two senior police officers for their failure to arrest a hotelier accused of raping a British tourist. Attorney General G Vahanvati submitted that Brijesh Kumar Soni and Gopal Singh Rathore, two DSP-rank officers, had been placed under suspension after they failed to arrest the accused,Prabhat Singh Rana. He also submitted a status report regarding the steps taken to arrest Rana against whom a proclamation order has been issued.
Rana, the owner of a guest house, was convicted to life imprisonment by a fast track court on May 1,2008 for raping a British tourist. The Rajasthan High Court had suspended the sentence in July and granted the convict bail, pending disposal of the appeal filed by him. In the last hearing, the bench comprising Justices Markandey Katju and Asok Kumar Ganguly had directed that the state home secretary be present at the hearing.
