On Thursday, when Chief Minister Nitish Kumars convoy was attacked by a mob in Khagaria,it was former convict Ranbir Yadav, husband of JD(U) MLA Poonam Devi Yadav, who came to his rescue. Nitish acknowledged his help at a public meeting later, saying he would not have been able to attend it if Yadav had not come to his aid.
Convicted in the 1985 Lakshmipur-Taufir diara carnage in which nine people were killed,Yadav has completed his jail term.
Some TV news channels showed Yadav holding a policemans carbine as he staved off protesters in Khagaria. He and his supporters escorted Nitish till the Dumri bridge, about 45 km from Khagaria, late on Thursday evening. There was some conspiracy to attack the CM. RJD workers and other anti-social elements were among the crowd… The administration was not confident of escorting the CM to the rally venue amid the chaos, Yadav said, explaining his involvement.
I picked up the weapon from the ground after it fell from a policemans hand. I must have held it for less than a minute, he said, adding,CM praised me,I am happy.
Senior police officers remained tight-lipped on the incident. We have formed a special investigation team which will do its job. We have video footage of the crowd, said DGP Abhayanand.
Munger DIG Anil Kishore Yadav said no case would be filed against Yadav. The SIT has booked 72 people, including RJD workers,so far. Nitish has accused the RJD of hatching a conspiracy to kill him after being unable to challenge him politically.
Intelligence agencies said the Khagaria incident was a result of police over-confidence. Central and state agencies had alerted the state government about apprehension of a strong protest from teachers and other disgruntled groups at Khagaria, which has never been Nitishs stronghold.
