TN discretionary house quota goes

Tamil Nadu government has decided to put an end to the quota system.

Apparently embarrassed over the revelation that the government discretionary quota in allotting houses and plots were benefiting only those close to the power centres, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to put an end to the quota system with effect from Friday.

This was announced by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on the day during his address to the Assembly — a customary event which was marred by strong protests from Opposition benches. “The system of allotting houses and plots under the Government Discretionary Quota in vogue for the past several years in TN Housing Board is being put to an end from today,” announced the Governor,a little while after the Opposition members, including the AIADMK,MDMK and Left parties, were evicted out of the Assembly for disrupting the proceedings.

The government’s decision follows an RTI Act revelation that the scheme benefited only influential persons in the establishment.
