A day after he sought permission to appear in an Indian Air Force examination this Sunday,Vinay Sharma, one of the four men being tried for the December 16 gangrape of a woman who died later, turned up in court on Friday with a fractured arm. He alleged he was “brutally assaulted” by other inmates in the jail who taunted him for planning to take an exam.

Even Dayan Krishnan, the special public prosecutor, said: “It troubles me greatly and I am extremely disturbed to see an accused coming to the court in this condition. Tihar Jail authorities should be summoned to court.”

Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna directed the superintendent of Tihar Jail No. 7,where Sharma is lodged,to appear in court on Saturday and explain how an inmate could be assaulted inside the jail. The court also directed Tihar authorities to “ensure the security and safety of all the four accused”.

Sharma’s right arm was plastered and in a sling when he appeared in court on Friday. He said he was beaten on Thursday night and taken to GB Pant Hospital. The MLC mentioned “a fall” but he claimed he was beaten.

“The other inmates told me last evening,‘You want to write an exam? You want to enter the Air Force? We will show you what it is to write an exam.’ Then they started hitting me on my right hand till I fell down in pain. Doctors told me my hand is broken,” Sharma said.

“Mujhe yahin marwa do par Tihar Jail mat bhejo. Bahut dar lagta hai (Kill me here but don’t send me to Tihar Jail. I feel scared there),” defence counsel A P Singh told the court on Sharma’s behalf.
