Ten months after they raped and killed a four-year-old girl,three youths were given the death sentence by a court in Indore on Friday after calling the crime rarest of rare.
A resident of Mandsaur,the victim had accompanied her father,a tuberculosis patient,to Indore for treatment but went missing while watching a marriage procession on the night of June 24.
An autorickshaw driver and his two unemployed friends abducted her. After raping her they smashed her head with a stone and an iron rod and dumped the body in a culvert in Malviyanagar locality under the MIG Police Station.
While giving the capital punishment to auto driver Babu alias Ketan,26,Jintendra alias Jitu,20,and Sunny alias devendra,23,Additional Sessions Judge Indra Singh said they did not deserve mercy while responding to the defence lawyers plea that they were young.
Sub-inspector Y R Yadav,who investigated the case,told The Indian Express that the three youths were drug addicts. He said a purse found near the body containing a cheque and a promissory note led the police to the accused when they were about to flee.
Within a few hours of the crime,the trio went to Omkareshwar to escape detention.
The DNA tests carried out at Sagars FSL confirmed that all the three were involved in the crime,the investigation officer said. Jitendra and Sunny tried to blame Babu for the crime saying they were not involved.
Besides the death sentence under Section 302,the court also sentenced the trio under Section 376 (life sentence) and seven years each for destruction of evidence and kidnapping. The convicts have been given 30 days to appeal against the judgment.
A crowd present in the court on Friday tried to attack the convicts but was prevented by the police.
