Three members of an inter-state gang were shot dead in an alleged encounter with the police in Lucknow early on Sunday morning. The three were shot at after they reportedly refused to stop at a police check-post in Husseinganj. One of the men escaped,police said.
According to the police,the deceased Ghulam Ghaus Khan and Shakeel Ahmed of Kanpur and Shamshad of Allahabad were members of the Hawa Singh gang and wanted in several criminal cases in Uttar Pradesh,Maharashtra and Gujarat.
SHO Baliram Saroj said that around 3 am on Sunday,the four,travelling in a Maruti van without a numberplate,approached the Husseinganj crossing. They were asked to stop,but reportedly sped away.
The police gave a chase for about 15 km before teams from several police stations managed to trap them. Police say that when cornered,the men opened fire. In the ensuing shootout,the three men were killed and one reportedly managed to escape.
