From the government

Pranab Mukherjee,Finance Minister: The veteran firefighter has always been the man to quell any crisis. A negotiator par excellence,he is also known for his short temper — though many think it is an attribute that he uses to his advantage while engaging in tough negotiations. It is also his mastery in draftsmanship as well as his stature in the party that enables him to take decisions on the spot and made him the chief negotiator.

Salman Khurshid,Law Minister: With his amiable nature,he succeeded in striking the right chord with Team Anna. His understanding of law as well as dexterity in drafting helped. Was able to instantly engage even those with whom he has had no contact ever — like Bhaiyyu Maharaj.

Vilasrao Deshmukh,Science and Tech Minister: Having dealt with Anna Hazare on several occasions when he was Maharashtra chief minister,Deshmukh was a natural choice. He was chosen also because he could converse in Marathi with Anna. He first made contact with Anna through former bureaucrat U C Sarangi, who served as his chief secretary in the state.

Sandeep Dikshit,Congress MP from East Delhi: His experience and contacts in the NGO sector came in handy as those on the other side saw him as a reliable emissary. Had crossed paths with Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi on earlier occasions.

Pawan Khera,Political Secretary to Delhi CM: Khera’s contacts with middle rung functionaries in the Team Anna camp proved helpful in cracking through. He also arranged for Team Anna representatives to meet with the government side at various locations.

Team Anna

Prashant Bhushan: The senior lawyer-cum-activist dealt with a battery of legal minds from the government side. Acted as the lead negotiator and was said to be the most understanding of the lot.

Arvind Kejriwal: The brain behind the Lokpal Bill,Kejriwal came across as adamant. Not much appreciated in the government team. He was made to skip meetings in the last two days.

Kiran Bedi: A former cop,Bedi emerged as an unrelenting hardliner. Had to be withdrawn from negotiations.

Medha Patkar: A late entrant, she replaced Bedi in the negotiating team.
