A day after the raid on former vice-chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Noble Thamburaj,in connection with alleged irregularities in the development of a defence land in Pune cantonment, the CBI has approached the Army’s Additional Director-General,Discipline and Vigilance,to provide them with more inputs regarding the case. Besides Thamburaj, the house of former defence estates officer of Pune circle S R Nayyar and Kalpataru Builders’ office were searched.

Thamburaj on Wednesday issued a statement to clear his name by saying he does not have access to official documents. “You would appreciate that an Army Commander cannot micro-manage,since the span of his activities is very large. He has to delegate and rely on staff’s advice,” he said in a statement. “No defence land has been transferred to any builder during my tenure in Southern Command. The sanction was given before my tenure. The building on the said land (8A,Lothian Road) was constructed before I took charge. The only issue was giving the completion certificate,” he said.

The Army’s Southern Command also issued a statement. “Bungalow No. 8A,Lothian Road is located on 0.96 acres of prime defence land adjacent to MG Road in Pune cantonment and was reserved for married officers’ accommodation. The original lessee had transferred it to Kalpataru Builders who wanted to develop it for commercial use, violating terms of lease, leading to litigation. The Bombay HC and the SC orders were favourable to the Army. But instead of implementing orders,an out-of-court settlement grossly disadvantageous to Army was arrived at. Army, pursuant to its policy of zero tolerance to corruption, carried out an inquiry and handed over these cases to CBI for investigation and prosecution of the guilty,” the release said. (With PTI)
