Test confirms Bastar body not of CRPF man

The DNA report of the headless body that was found in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar area on August 15 has confirmed that the victim was not CRPF man Kanhaiya Yadav

The DNA report of the headless body that was found in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar area on August 15 has confirmed that the victim was not CRPF man Kanhaiya Yadav, whose identity card and driving licence were found there, but one Umesh Yadav from Allahabad whom Kanhaiya had promised a job in the CRPF.

“With the DNA report,it has been established that Kanhaiya had faked his death to claim insurance and other benefits. He took Umesh to Bastar and killed him. The police have began the process to declare Kanhaiya an absconder,” said an official of the Chhattisgarh Police.

Police handed over the body to Umesh’s family on Friday. “For the past two months,we have been living in uncertainty. The family was divided over the identity of the body as it was unrecognisable,” said Umesh’s cousin,Ram Pujan Yadav.

Sources said the police in Bastar are investigating the role of Kanhaiya’s family and may visit his town,Ghazipur, soon. Police have come to know that a week before leaving for Bastar,Kanhaiya had withdrawn Rs 2.98 lakh from his bank account in Ghazipur. “We are looking for the person to whom he had handed over the money. That person,it seems, knew the plan,” said a police officer.

Kanhaiya,a constable-cum-driver with 204 Cobra Battalion in Bastar, left Ghazipur on August 13 by Sarnath Express, but never reached the unit. On August 15,police found the headless body. Since the body had Kanhaiya’s driving licence and identity card on it,they handed it over to the CRPF. On investigation,it was found that the fingerprints and other features of the body did not match Kanhaiya’s. In the meantime,Bastar police came to know that Umesh, who had also taken Sarnath Express on August 13 for Bastar, was missing. They were informed that Umesh had left for Bastar along with a CRPF constable,Krishna Yadav. Umesh’s brother Amreesh informed that Krishna Yadav had promised him a job in the the CRPF. Amreesh called up Krishna Yadav but found his phone switched off. The Bastar police found that ‘Krishna Yadav’ had used that cellphone to call Kanhaiya’s cousin Kapil.
